FINAL REFLECTION

What have I learnt in this module?

The Design Principles module is an entirely new experience for me. I was a Science student for the majority of my education in which it became a little mundane to look at thesis and journals every other day. I decided to attempt something new by enrolling in the Creative Media course as my minor and chose the Design Principles module. Through this module, I definitely gained many knowledges in terms of design theory by learning the application of the basic principles to create a high-quality design. However, the values that I have learnt was equally important. I was taught about time management as we are required to follow a tight schedule by completing 4 assignments within 14 weeks. It was challenging to provide obvious progress each week, however, I have learnt to make personal schedules and priority management which guided me throughout the semester in achieving satisfying results.

What did I enjoy the most?

The ideation for the assignments of this module is limitless in which we are given creative freedom as long as it does not touch any sensitive topics. This is what I enjoyed the most as I am able to fully discover myself by exploring various ideas. My favourite process in every assignment is the design exploration in which I am able to come up with as many designs as I want. This helped me in improving my creativity so that I am able to develop different ideas efficiently which is crucial as a designer. The only requirement is that we must apply any of the design principles into our artwork, which I think that it is a great opportunity to develop a habit in utilizing the principles to improve our design in terms of composition, visual aesthetic and such.

What did I not enjoy the most?

The only aspect of this module that I did not enjoy the most is every student’s nightmares, which is the tight deadlines. This module is not the only module I am taking this semester, as I have four other core modules for the Bachelor in Science (Hons) Food Science. The work schedule during this semester was hectic in which every week I have so many tasks to do. It was the busiest semester in all my education journey. It was highly challenging to provide progress by updating the blog every week, in which at one point, I was slightly struggling to get work done. However, this challenged has allowed me to improve my time management skills as well as rid of my bad habit in procrastination. I have also improved in productivity as I am able to achieve satisfying progress every day.

What have I learnt about myself through this module?

This module has greatly aided me in self-discovery. Every assignment during the semester have showed me what I am capable of and what I am lacking. For example, Project 1- Self Portrait was the most challenging assignment in my opinion. The concept was relatively simple, however, I discovered that I do not really know who I view myself as or how others view me as. After the completion of this particular assignment, I have learnt more about myself in terms of the things I am more interested in as well as my personality traits. I have also discovered my personal art style through this module. During the final compilation, I noticed a distinct pattern in my art which included bright and vibrant colors which tells me a lot of my personality as a designer. Furthermore, I have learnt that I enjoy creating blogs and journaling my experiences through visual notes.

What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?

During my learning journey in the Design Principles module, the greatest change that occurred was the confidence in my own work. Prior to this, I did not have many friends that are interested in art in which I was the only one judging my own work. I did not know whether my work was good or bad as to how to improve it. During this module, I highly appreciated that our lecturer, Miss Yip was constantly evaluating and providing with advice in terms of improvements that can be done to create a final outcome with higher quality. I was able to receive professional advice and monitor my improvements each week. I felt that this learning journey was highly beneficial which changed my personality a lot in terms of confidence. Nothing remained unchanged as I greatly developed myself as a designer as well as a better person.

What could be improved in this module?

The Design Principles module was greatly beneficial as it allowed me to gain many new experiences and knowledge as well as helped me improved in the aspect of designing. It was near to flawless as it successfully achieved all the promised learning outcomes which is paired with the impeccable guidance by our lecturer, Miss Yip. In my opinion, the one thing that can be improved in this module is that I hope that there were more opportunities in the exploration of symbolism. A high-quality design requires a message from the artist in which it is expressed clearly through the artwork. I found that symbolism is very challenging where I hope that there was more guidance in this aspect.

In conclusion, the Design Principles module guided by Miss Yip Jin Chi was an amzing experience from the beginning to the end. All the ups and downs, including every obstacle in ideation, exploration until the completion of a satisfying final outcome, has provided me with a lot of takeaways. I am now confident in my design skills along with the utilization of the principles learnt. However, there are still a lot of room for improvements, hence, I will continue to develop myself as a design and continue to explore other forms of art.
