✦1.0 DESIGN RESEARCH✦
First, I went to research each of the TIGER values in order to better understand the ways to interpret them in achieving any of the SDG. The values include Teamwork, Integrity, Growth, Excellence and Efficiency, as well as, Relationship Building.
- Teamwork : the combined action of a group to achieve effective and efficient results.
- Integrity : the state of being whole and undivided.
- Growth : the act or process of development and gradual increase.
- Excellence and Efficiency : the act of balancing efficiency with perfection.
- Relationship Building : working to build or maintain ethical relationships with individuals or organizations who are potentially helpful in achieving goals and establishing advantages.
This is followed by research on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The goal that peaked my interest the most are Sustainable Cities and Communities and Climate Action.
Sustainable cities and communities
- This SDG is to overcome the issue of overpopulation in which modern and sustainable cities are required to accommodate the population. Intelligent urban planning are aimed to create safe, affordable and resilient cities with green and culturally inspiring living conditions.
- The targets include:
- Safe and affordable housing
- Affordable and sustainable transport system
- Inclusive and sustainable urbanization
- Protect the world's cultural and natural heritage
- Reduce the adverse effects of natural disasters
- Reduce environmental impact of cities
- Provide access to safe and inclusive green and public spaces
- Strong national and regional development planning
- Implement policies for inclusion, resource efficiency and disaster risk reduction
- Support least developed countries in sustainable and resilient building
- This SDG aims to overcome climate change which include the various pollution caused by industrial development. Education, innovation and adherence to climate commitments are required to protect the planet.
- The targets include:
- Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate related disasters
- Integrate climate change measures into policies and planning
- Build knowledge and capacity to meet climate change
- Implement the UN framework convention on climate change
After research, I have decided to choose as my main theme for the MyTiger poster contest. I moved onto searching on references for inspiration prior to drafting out an initial sketch.
I looked up to an artist who is an active environmentalist and mainly draws illustration to support climate action, hence, I looked at her works to understand more about how to portray climate action through illustrations.
I created a mood board with poster designs that I found interesting from Pinterest and compiled them together.

✦2.0 DESIGN PROCESS✦
2.1 Ideation
Based on the references and mood board, I have drafted out a quick sketch of the poster. I have chosen to include one of the MyTiger values into the poster, which is TEAMWORK. Hence, my initial idea was a group of people working together on painting a huge mural of a green environment on the side of the building. In which the mural fuse into the environment which is destroyed due to climate change.

However, I was not satisfied with the initial concept and continued to explore with more sketches. This time I have included a globe to represent the world that is abandoned by humans indicating the effects of climate change. I tried out a different perspective to give a more dynamic effect on the composition in which I was satisfied with.

After the evaluation of our sketches by Mr. Hafiz on Week 6, he commented that we are required to include a tagline in the poster. Hence, I came up with a few taglines to be included that may fit with my concept:
- Cherish The World
- Together, We Change, We Heal
- Better Together, Better Tomorrow
Then, I went back to the drawing board and adjusted the composition as to fit the tagline while maintaining the same concept as the previous sketches. I have chosen the tagline 'Cherish The World' as I like the simplicity in wordings yet it gives a powerful message.
2.2 Illustration Design
After I was satisfied with the sketch, I started the illustration design process in Adobe Illustration. As I was designing, I made use of the elements of design as well as various design principles which are a set of values that act as a compass for a good design.
I started with determining the base structure of the illustration by drawing a grassy ground utilizing the Pen tool and the Pen Curve tool.
Then I drew the globe in which light is emitting out of it, appearing as an urgent message from the Earth itself. I used geometric shapes and combined them together to create the flowing shape of the light emitted. I have applied the design principle, movement, hence, a dynamic composition is created with simple flow of lines. The flow of lines are to assist in bringing the eyes of the audience to the headline.
Then, I filled in the negative spaces with backgrounds, such as a dark blue sky as well as a destroyed world filled with pollution. This adds a sense of urgency to the message conveyed through the illustration. The background is also dark in which the design principle, contrast is applied to put emphasis on the bright yellow aura spilled from the Earth.
Finally, I worked on the headline of the poster illustration. Based on my sketch, I decided that the placement of the headline would be on the top part of the canvas. I designed the headline by using the font, Bodoni Std. The selected Serif font gives a magical tone that is cohesive with the desired tone of the poster, which is a message spilled out from the broken world.
- I used the Pencil Tool to change the word as to give it more character.
- I also utilized the function, Envelope Distort to give a warp effect to the text. Hence, it appears as if it is flowing out from the bright yellow aura.
- A gradient of colour and leaves were added to the word by utilizing the principles of typeface.

During Week 9, our illustrations were evaluated in which advice was given to further improve the work. Miss Anis suggested that I could make the words 'The World' bigger as there were many negative spaces. Hence, I agreed and made the necessary adjustments in which made the canvas look more filling and less awkward.

2.3 Final Outcome

The title of this illustration is 'Cherish the World'.
Our home, some call it the planet Earth, some call it the world, is urgently calling for help. The relentless march of industrial advancements has caused a myriad of destructions due to the endless generation of pollution, resulting in the era of climate change. This have inflicted severe damage upon our beloved planet, which affects the homes of many. It now languishes in a state of ruin, it’s plea for help blatantly being ignored by humanity. If the neglect and the disregard towards our planet continues, it will further deteriorate and result in a hollow shell. We, as inhabitants of this planet, hold an important responsibility to answer the urgent message spilling out of the broken planet.
We must unite with unwavering teamwork, which aligns with the MyTiger Values. We must carry out action to combat climate change and its devastating consequences. We must actively participate in the restoration of the former beauty of our planet. We must cherish the world.

✦REFLECTION✦
Project 1 of Illustration and Visual Narrative is on a larger scale compared to the previous assignment. This assignments requires us to illustrate a complete poster based on a selected theme provided by the Maybank Foundation as a means to participate in the MyTiger Values Art and Design competition hosted by said company.
This assignment was rather challenging, not only we have to select from one of the themes provided, we also need to integrate one of the MyTiger values through our illustration. It was slightly difficult to include that many messages behind a single artwork, however, I have done several research and exploration to thoroughly understand the themes given as well as what type of artwork would align with the requirements of the competition.
Other than that, we are currently in the middle of the semester, hence, there were many assignments on my hands. Moreover, I was taking this module as a minor in which I had to juggle both assignments from my minors and my majors. It was a challenge to find time to work on each assignment. However, I have practiced time management in which I set my priorities for each task based on the deadline. Hence, I have successfully created a satisfying artwork for this assignment.
In conclusion, this assignment was a great experience as to utilizing Adobe Illustrator as a tool of design. Throughout the assignment progression, I have watched countless tutorials of useful functions of Adobe Illustrator, such as the envelope distortion function which helped me create a dynamic effect on the headline. Thus, I have gained useful knowledge as well as gained experience in creating a good design.
